Hear him clear- The "Greed is Good" personalities and people that made China GREAT and American middle class lost their jobs.
Citadel CEO Ken Griffin says President Donald Trump’s tariff policy on China is misguided as the jobs it would “reshore” are mostly those making low-value items. “There’s no money in there for anybody, and there’s certainly no money for doing those jobs,” Griffin said at a forum in New York.

Ken Griffin, the founder and CEO of Citadel Securities who backed Donald Trump in 2024 election, is taking issue with the president’s tariff policy.

Griffin tore into Trump’s tariffs during an appearance Thursday at the Forbes Iconoclast Summit in New York, describing tariffs as “protectionist policy” that “comes at a great price to the U.S. consumer.”

The president’s shifting tariff policy has resulted, for now, in a 30% tariff on most imports from China and the end of ultra-cheap imports from the likes of fast-fashion label Shein and Temu. And that pain for the U.S. consumer isn’t helping the American worker, Griffin said.

“Americans want to wear Nikes, not make them,” he said, quoting criticism from New York University marketing professor Scott Galloway.

“I don’t know why we strive to bring back low value-added products to the United States,” Griffin continued. “There’s no money in there for anybody, and there’s certainly no money for doing those jobs… Jobs are actually walking out of China into lower-cost jurisdictions.

“Why are we aspiring to be the nation of the lowest-cost workforce in the world?”

In fact, China is asking the same question, according to Griffin. Speaking with Forbes editor-at-large Maneet Ahuja at the summit, Griffin recounted his trip to China in March, when he met with multiple government officials to discuss investing in the country.

“China dreams to be like the United States—a nation of very high value-added jobs, a nation rich in services, rich in high development…[with] a stunning GDP per capita,” Griffin said.

“‘China aspires to be like the United States,’”Griffin said a Chinese government official told him. The person said, “‘We want to be like you. Why are you trying to be like us?’” and gave “a look of befuddlement,” according to Griffin.

Griffin said he does support reshoring jobs—but for high-technology, high-value products.

“It’s one thing to make Nikes, it’s another thing to make F-35 fighters,” he said.

America always creates the devil that comes back to hurt her-
Billionaire Elon Musk has countered president Donald Trump's threat to "terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts," in spectacular fashion: by threatening to cut off the United States' access to outer space.

"In light of the President’s statement about cancellation of my government contracts, SpaceX will begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately," Musk tweeted.

But it didn't take him long to blink. A few hours later — and after the publication of this story — Musk reversed course, agreeing to "cool off" and saying that "we won't decommission Dragon."

That's not surprising. As executives at SpaceX no doubt desperately tried to explain to him after the dustup, the company would be in terrible danger without all the money it gets from NASA.

And if Musk were to make good on his threat, the United States' space program could experience a setback of epic proportions. SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft has quickly become the de facto method for NASA astronauts to travel to the International Space Station.

In other words, the threat could prevent American astronauts from visiting the space station — especially considering that the only other American option, Boeing's Starliner, is likely still years away from becoming a viable alternative, if ever.

It was a significant escalation in a major falling out between the world's most powerful man and its richest one. The pair have been openly feuding about Trump's so-called "big, beautiful bill," culminating in threats and personal attacks.

The collateral damage of the feud could be enormous, particularly for the US space program.

Ars Technica's Eric Berger suggested that Trump ripping up Musk's government contracts "would both end the International Space Station and simultaneously provide no way to safely deorbit it."

"This just gets better and better," Musk replied in a laughing emoji-laden tweet. "Go ahead, make my day…"

The news comes after the Trump administration abruptly pulled its nominee for the NASA administrator role, Jared Isaacman.

Isaacman, who was hand-picked by Musk, has been to space twice with the help of SpaceX.

The news greatly angered Musk, causing him to go on a crusade against Trump's tax bill.

Musk's latest threats to decommission SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft could put the Trump administration and NASA in an extremely unfortunate position. Apart from Boeing's much-maligned Starliner, which has yet to complete a successful crewed mission to the ISS, the only alternative to send astronauts to the space station is Russia's Soyuz spacecraft.

While the station's days are already numbered — NASA recently awarded SpaceX a contract to decommission the orbital lab in 2030 — continuing operations could prove extremely difficult without Dragon.

Trump ‘Pitches’ F-47 Aircraft, Golden Dome Defense Shield To Its Closet Ally In Indo-Pacific Region: Media

US President Donald Trump has reportedly discussed two big-ticket military programs with one of his closest allies in the Indo-Pacific: the Golden Dome defense shield and the F-47 sixth-generation aircraft.

Trump discussed potential collaboration with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba during a phone call in May 2025 regarding the development of technology for the Golden Dome missile defense shield, Nikkei Asia reported. Japan is reportedly exploring support for the initiative, the report claimed.

Citing unidentified sources, the Japanese publication said that the two nations will likely collaborate on systems meant to intercept inbound threats. The report did not provide specific details about the discussions that took place between the two leaders.

Trump announced plans for the “Golden Dome” system in May 2025, saying it would cost around $175 billion and would become operational by the end of his term in 2029.

However, experts say the scheme faces huge technical and political challenges, and could cost far more than he has estimated in the public announcement. For instance, the Congressional Budget Office earlier estimated that the US might have to spend up to US$542 billion over 20 years to develop and launch the network of space-based interceptors under the program.

The US President may now be seeking potential partners who could share the cost of developing and operationalizing the Golden Dome, as well as developing sophisticated interceptors to counter missile threats.

Japan, on the other hand, could be a significant contributor to the system, given its previous experience in developing interceptors. Additionally, it could contribute funding or resources, such as research and development (R&D) or manufacturing, to offset costs.

Unveiling plans for the Golden Dome last month, Trump disclosed that Canada was interested in participating in the program. He said that while it “automatically” makes sense to include Canada in the new defence system, Canada will have to pay its fair share.

However, the President may have just thrown cold water over that potential collaboration by once again calling for Canada to become the 51st state of the United States of America.

“I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fabulous Golden Dome System, that it will cost 61 billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation,” Trump posted on his Truth Social network on May 29. “But (it) will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State. They are considering the offer!”

For Japan, the Golden Dome would be an enticing offer, particularly since it has been grappling with an enhanced missile threat from China, North Korea, and Russia.

Japan and the US have previously collaborated on ballistic missile defense and are currently working together on the development of a hypersonic missile interceptor, known as the Glide Phase Interceptor (GPI).

However, the Golden Dome might help Japan in more ways than one.

Citing unidentified sources, the report stated that Japan could use its participation in the Golden Dome initiative as a bargaining chip to obtain concessions in ongoing trade talks with Washington.

Trump has threatened to impose a 24% tariff on Japan starting next month unless a bilateral agreement can be reached.

Japan has been disgruntled by a 25% tariff on cars, trucks, and key auto parts that took effect in April. Additionally, Trump has increased the duties to 50% on all imported Japanese aluminum and steel. Both these tariffs could significantly weaken the Japanese economy.

Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba has stated that bilateral conversations on trade expansion, non-tariff measures, and economic security are ongoing. At the same time, the administration is also considering an increase in its purchases of US military hardware, as well as collaboration on rebuilding and repairing US warships in Japan.

The Golden Dome would, thus, fit perfectly in this scheme if the Japanese government seriously considers it.

F-47 Also On Offer To Japan
A report published in the Japanese publication Asahi Shimbun last week stated that Donald Trump randomly brought up the F-47 in a call with Shigeru Ishiba last month. Sources in the Ishiba administration told the newspaper that the call took place on May 23 and was organized at Trump’s request.

Trump said the “47” in “F-47” is a good number, and asked Ishiba to concur, in what can only be described as typical Trump fashion of conversation. He also heaped praises on the F-22, which the US never sold to Japan due to the sensitivity of that technology, even though the latter wanted it. Trump then went on to talk about the F-55, an upgraded, twin-engine F-35 variant that he proposed during a presser in Qatar recently.

The President then asked Ishiba if he wanted to see the amazing fighter jets that the United States had, adding that he would get the “best” for Japan.

The report stated that Trump only casually inquired of Ishiba whether Japan was interested in purchasing US-made fighter jets and did not explicitly urge Japan to do so.

Nonetheless, the Trump administration has made no bones about its intention to pitch the aircraft in the export market.

During the F-47 announcement, Trump said that U.S. allies “are calling constantly” to obtain an export version of the NGAD fighter. We will sell it to “certain allies … perhaps toned-down versions. We’d like to tone them down about 10 percent, which probably makes sense, because someday, maybe they’re not our allies, right?”
The F-47 offer comes as Tokyo might be unhappy with its own Global Combat Air Program (GCAP), a sixth-generation combat jet being pursued jointly by Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

Reuters reported on May 30 that Japan is growing doubtful that the GCAP will meet its 2035 rollout target, potentially forcing Tokyo to fill air defense gaps with upgrading existing fighters or purchasing new jets.

The fear of GCAP delays arises as China accelerates the testing of two sixth-generation fighter jet prototypes, namely the J-36 and the J-50. If China inducts a sixth-generation fighter by 2030, the capability gap between Japan and China will widen.

According to an infographic recently posted on X by US Air Force chief, General David Allvin, the F-47 is anticipated to become operational between 2025 and 2029—more than a decade before the GCAP’s rollout date if delays are factored in.

Since the end of the Second World War, Japan has only purchased American fighter jets and has been a loyal and important customer for the US, which explains why Trump would want it to consider the American F-35s instead. A purchase of the American sixth-generation fighter would also boost interoperability between the two allies, particularly in the volatile Indo-Pacific region.

Ukraine has proved it doesn’t need Trump.

Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed that Ukraine holds “no cards in this war”.

Well, they just played one hell of a hand.

On Sunday, a clandestine drone operation hit as many as five different airfields deep inside Russian territory, striking at least eight and possibly dozens of Soviet-era nuclear-capable heavy bombers, which are today impossible to remanufacture.

And the way Ukraine did so is worthy of a Robert Ludlam thriller.

Its domestic security service smuggled in 150 First Person View (FPV) drones in concealed compartments on the top of multiple shipping containers, undetected by Russia’s own sprawling counterintelligence organs, which were then loaded on the backs of articulated lorries and driven to within striking distance of their targets.

At the push of a button, the tops of the containers popped off, allowing a swarm of lethal unmanned aerial vehicles to ascend which then struck their unsuspecting targets; lines of Russian bombers fully fueled and awaiting takeoff.

The timing of this kinetic covert operation could not have been better from the Ukrainian perspective.

Peace negotiations begin again in Istanbul with the Russians on Monday, even as Moscow continues to make clear it isn’t interested in a 30-day ceasefire.

Trump is said to be exasperated that a suddenly “crazy” Putin won’t end the war as a “personal favour” to him and is growing weary of engaging in pointless diplomacy.

But the US president has also made no statements about future security assistance to Ukraine, which badly needs three things only the US military-industrial complex can provide at scale: ballistic missile defence, GMLRS rocket artillery and howitzer ammunition.

So Ukraine, it seems, is imposing its own bespoke penalties on Russia, hitting its adversary on supposedly impregnable ground and eliminating a good percentage of its irreplaceable bomber fleet.

CBS News and Axios have reported that Kyiv did not inform the Trump administration of its plans, which took 18 months to pull together.

This means that when Zelensky sat through that Two Minutes of Hate session delivered jointly by Trump and JD Vance in the Oval Office last February, he had this secret caper bouncing about in the back of his head.

It’s worth re-watching that confrontation in light of what just happened.

Now, Ukraine has a much needed morale boost at a time when the war has ground down into one of attrition and Russia has launched its now annual summer offensive, which is making costly but consistent progress in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk.

Ukraine’s capacity to bring the war home to Russia in such a bold fashion is also likely to encourage pro-Ukrainian Republicans who are growing anxious and impatient with Trump’s dithering.

Lindsay Graham, the Trump-whisperer senator from South Carolina who has drawn up a range of sanctions against Russia for Mr Trump to sign off, said: “The ever-resourceful Ukraine used creative drone warfare tactics to successfully attack Russian bombers and military assets used to kill Ukrainian citizens and destroy their country.”

This operation has demonstrated that Ukraine is very much still in the fight, whatever dour statements emerge from the White House.

Mr Trump, easily distracted and unfocused on his best days, has told big and small lies about the war since the beginning of his second term, all damaging to the reality and perception that Ukraine is holding its own.

He has said, for instance, that “thousands of Ukrainian troops were surrounded” in Kursk when they were not, and claimed that Russia would have taken Kyiv in “five hours” had Russian tanks not got “stuck in the mud”.

Ukraine’s drone escapades have embarrassed Mr Trump, as well as Mr Putin, it seems.

Ukraine’s home-grown munitions are not only changing the nature of this war, but the nature of all future wars fought in the 21st century.

A nation regarded for its IT and engineering sectors has adapted ingeniously to being outgunned and outmanned by an invading army.

A few hundred thousand dollars worth of FPV drones have just eliminated approximately $7 billion of Russian kit, according to the SBU.

No shambolic mineral or rare earths deals had to be struck for that to happen.

Ukraine is mass producing its own variegated fleet of drones at scale using both its own coffers and money from seventeen Western countries – the UK among them – part of a “drone coalition.”

Tulsi Gabbard, Trump’s director of national intelligence, is said to be mulling replacing the presidential daily briefings with video segments similar to those of Fox News, in a desperate effort to get the commander-in-chief to follow along with his own nationals security prerogatives.

Russian nuclear bombers burning on the tarmac is surely one way to get even his attention.

Small Indian grocery shops and major online fashion retailers are boycotting Turkish products ranging from chocolates, coffee, jams and cosmetics to clothing amid growing anger at Turkey's support for Pakistan in a confrontation with India.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan expressed public solidarity with Pakistan, another majority-Muslim country, after India conducted military strikes in response to an attack in Indian Kashmir by Islamist assailants. Cross-border fighting continued for four days before a ceasefire was declared.

On Monday, the All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation (AICPDF), which supplies 13 million mom-and-pop grocery stores, said it was launching an "indefinite and total boycott" of all Turkish-origin goods, which would affect chocolates, wafers, jams, biscuits and skincare products.

What's happening?
On Feb. 4, the White House enacted new tariffs, paused them on Feb. 7, and then enacted them again on March 4, which included eliminating the de minimis trade exemption.

De minimis became law in the U.S. through the U.S. Tariff Act of 1930, with the goal of letting people and small businesses skip import fees for small shipments. The original amount was $200 and was raised to $800 in 2016.

Why is the ending of de minimis important?
Fast fashion has made buying cheap clothing from overseas too easy, offering clothes for as little as a few dollars each and therefore encouraging a larger haul per customer. To be able to sell so cheaply, the clothing is made to deteriorate, or at least not made to last, causing Americans to toss 82 pounds of clothing every year, on average.

While these extra few dollars of tariffs might make companies like Shein and Temu absorb the costs with small price increases or find an alternate route to keep consumers, sustainability adv

China announced Tuesday it will impose additional tariffs of up to 15% on imports of key U.S. farm products, including chicken, pork, soy and beef, and also expanded controls on doing business with U.S. companies.

The tariffs announced by the Commerce Ministry are due to take effect from March 10. They follow U.S. President Donald Trump’s order to raise tariffs on imports of Chinese products to 20% across the board. Those took effect on Tuesday.

Imports of U.S. grown chicken, wheat, corn and cotton will face an extra 15% tariff, it said. The tariff on sorghum, soybeans, pork, beef, seafoods, fruit, vegetables and dairy products will be increased by 10%.

Also Tuesday, Beijing placed 10 more U.S. firms on its unreliable entity list, which would bar them from engaging in China-related import or export activities and from making new investments in the country.
The firms listed are TCOM,Limited Partnership; Stick Rudder Enterprises LLC; Teledyne Brown Engineering; Huntington Ingalls Industries; S3 AeroDefense; Cubic Corporation; TextOre; ACT1 Federal; Exovera and Planate Management Group.

The addition of the 10 companies comes after China last month added two firms, fashion company PVH Group and biotechnology company Illumina, to the unreliable entities list.

Separately, China added 15 U.S. companies to its export control list, including aerospace and defense companies like General Dynamics Land Systems and General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, among others.

No suit, no lunch, no respect: Zelenskyy-Trump feud started with a fashion dig.
It was an undignified spectacle all around.
As soon as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emerged out of his motorcade at the West Wing, President Donald Trump immediately took a dig at his sartorial choice.

Outfitted in a black sweatshirt featuring an embroidered Ukrainian trident, black slacks and boots, he was substantially underdressed in comparison to Trump, who was wearing a suit and tie.

“You’re all dressed up today,” Trump said sarcastically.
It all quickly went downhill from there.

After a heated exchange in the Oval Office, Zelenskyy would later depart without signing an “economic partnership” deal he had travelled 5,000 miles to seal.
Zelenskyy, whose country was invaded by Russia three years ago, has been a known casual dresser.

He often favors olive green crewnecks with cargo pants and combat boots, a signal to the world that his country is still at war.

When Donald Trump was invited to cut the ribbon of a new Louis Vuitton workshop in Texas in 2019, critics were quick to question what was in it for the world’s biggest luxury goods group.

Shocked by the sight of LVMH boss Bernard Arnault standing alongside the president, some customers went even as far as to boycott the company. Even the business’s in-house creative director condemned the ties, taking to Instagram to say: “I am a fashion designer refusing this association.”

However, it is now clear that Arnault – dubbed the “wolf in cashmere” for his ruthless approach to business – was playing the long game.

On Jan 20, the French tycoon was granted a prime seat at Trump’s second inauguration, appearing alongside his wife Helene, son Alexandre (deputy chief of LVMH brand Moët Hennessy) and daughter Delphine (boss of LVMH’s Dior).

Arnault subsequently wasted no time praising Trump on his return from Washington, slapping down his native France in the process.

China’s Commerce Ministry said Thursday that it will investigate the fashion company PVH, which owns brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein, for suspected violations of trade rules.

The ministry said Thursday in statements posted online that it would investigate the company’s suspected boycott of products from the far western Xinjiang region, where China’s ruling Communist Party is accused of holding members of mostly Muslim ethnic groups in detention camps.

Washington has blocked some imports from Xinjiang, while Beijing has protested against such moves. China denies any abuses and says steps it has taken are necessary to combat terrorism and a separatist movement.

Companies that buy clothing, cotton, tomatoes and other goods from Xinjiang face pressure from western consumers over alleged human rights violations in the region, while Beijing has whipped up Chinese anger at brands that express concern about possible forced labor.

How does mass importation influence local cultures and consumer behavior?
By Hugo Keji

Mass importation significantly influences local cultures and consumer behavior in several ways:

1. Cultural Impact
Cultural Homogenization: Mass importation can lead to the homogenization of cultures, where local traditions and customs might be overshadowed by foreign influences.

This is often seen in the spread of Western culture through media, fashion, food, and lifestyle products.

Cultural Exchange and Fusion: On a positive note, mass importation can also lead to cultural exchange and fusion. Local cultures may adopt and adapt foreign elements, creating new, hybrid cultural practices and products.

Erosion of Traditional Practices: The influx of imported goods can sometimes undermine traditional industries and crafts, leading to the erosion of local cultural practices and skills.

Increased Cultural Awareness: Exposure to foreign goods can also increase cultural awareness and appreciation among local populations, fostering a more global perspective.

2. Consumer Behavior
Variety and Choice: Consumers benefit from a wider variety of goods and services, which can lead to increased satisfaction and the ability to choose products that better meet their needs and preferences.

Changes in Preferences and Tastes: The availability of imported goods can shift consumer preferences and tastes towards foreign products, sometimes at the expense of local products.

Price Competition: Imported goods often lead to increased competition, which can drive down prices and make goods more affordable for consumers. However, this can also put pressure on local producers to lower their prices, potentially impacting their profitability.

Quality and Innovation: Exposure to international standards can lead local producers to improve the quality of their products and adopt innovative practices to remain competitive.

Dependency on Imports: Over-reliance on imported goods can make local markets vulnerable to global market fluctuations, supply chain disruptions, and changes in international trade policies.

Brand Loyalty and Perception: Consumers may develop brand loyalty towards foreign brands, which are often perceived as higher quality or more prestigious. This can influence buying behavior and loyalty patterns in the long term.

3. Economic and Social Implications
Economic Growth: Importation can stimulate economic growth by providing access to goods that are not produced locally and by encouraging trade relationships.

Job Creation and Loss: While mass importation can create jobs in sectors such as retail and logistics, it can also lead to job losses in local industries that cannot compete with cheaper or better-quality imports.

Income Disparity: The benefits of mass importation may not be evenly distributed, potentially exacerbating income disparities. Wealthier consumers may have greater access to imported goods, while lower-income consumers may benefit less from these goods.

Overall, the influence of mass importation on local cultures and consumer behavior is multifaceted, with both positive and negative outcomes depending on the context and how societies manage these changes.

In what ways has globalization impacted cultural practices and traditions around the world?
By Hugo Keji

Globalization has significantly impacted cultural practices and traditions worldwide, leading to both positive and negative outcomes.

Here are some key ways globalization has influenced cultures:

1. Cultural Exchange and Hybridization
Fusion Cuisine: The blending of culinary traditions from different cultures has led to new, hybrid dishes and fusion restaurants, such as sushi burritos or Korean tacos.

Fashion: Traditional garments and designs have influenced global fashion trends, resulting in a mix of styles, like Western clothing incorporating African prints or Indian motifs.

2. Preservation and Revival of Traditions
Digital Archives: Globalization has facilitated the preservation of cultural heritage through digital archiving, allowing traditional music, dances, and languages to be documented and shared worldwide.

Tourism: Increased global tourism has led to a renewed interest in preserving cultural sites and traditions, as these become key attractions for visitors.

3. Cultural Homogenization
Fast Food Chains: The global spread of fast food chains like McDonald's and Starbucks has impacted local dietary habits and food cultures, sometimes leading to the decline of traditional culinary practices.

Media and Entertainment: The dominance of Western media has influenced global entertainment preferences, often overshadowing local traditions and narratives with Hollywood movies and popular TV shows.

4. Economic Opportunities and Challenges
Artisan Markets: Global markets have provided artisans with new opportunities to sell traditional crafts online, helping to sustain and promote traditional arts.

Economic Pressure: Global economic pressures can lead to the commercialization of cultural practices, where traditions are altered or commodified to appeal to international markets.

5. Social and Cultural Awareness
International Festivals: Cultural festivals, like Diwali or Chinese New Year, are now celebrated in many countries, increasing cross-cultural awareness and appreciation.

Education: Exposure to different cultures through travel, media, and education has fostered a greater understanding and respect for cultural diversity.

6. Standardization and Loss of Diversity
Language: The spread of dominant languages like English has led to the decline of indigenous languages, with many becoming endangered or extinct.

Architectural Styles: The global adoption of modern architectural styles can lead to a loss of traditional building techniques and designs, resulting in homogeneous urban landscapes.

7. Technology and Communication
Social Media: Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube enable the sharing of cultural practices and traditions, allowing for greater visibility and exchange.

Online Learning: Access to online resources and courses has enabled people to learn about and participate in cultural practices from around the world, such as virtual yoga classes or cooking tutorials.

8. Cultural Appropriation and Sensitivity
Fashion and Art: The adoption of cultural symbols and practices by mainstream fashion and art can lead to cultural appropriation, where the original meaning and significance are lost or misrepresented.

Awareness and Activism: Globalization has also led to greater awareness of cultural appropriation, prompting movements towards cultural sensitivity and respect.

Examples of Globalization's Impact on Cultural Practices
Yoga (India): Yoga has become a global phenomenon, often adapted and commercialized in various forms, which sometimes leads to the dilution of its traditional spiritual and philosophical aspects.

K-Pop (South Korea): The global popularity of K-pop has brought Korean culture to the forefront, influencing global music, fashion, and beauty standards, while also incorporating elements from various other cultures.

Carnival (Brazil): Brazilian Carnival, with its vibrant music and dance, has influenced festivals worldwide, leading to similar celebrations that blend local traditions with Brazilian elements.
Positive Impacts

Enhanced Cultural Understanding: Greater exposure to diverse cultures fosters mutual respect and understanding.

Economic Benefits: Cultural exchange can lead to economic growth through tourism, global markets for traditional crafts, and international collaborations.

Negative Impacts
Loss of Cultural Identity: The dominance of global cultural norms can erode local traditions and identities.

Cultural Dilution: Traditions may become commercialized and lose their original meaning and significance.
Globalization has brought cultures closer together, enabling the exchange and blending of traditions and practices.
However, it also poses challenges to the preservation of cultural diversity and authenticity.
Balancing these influences is crucial to maintaining the richness of the world's cultural heritage.

What are the impacts of globalization on African cultures?
By Ugo Ikeji

Globalization has had profound impacts on African cultures, influencing various aspects of traditional life, economy, and social structures.
The effects can be both positive and negative, depending on the perspective and context.

Below is a detailed analysis of these impacts, divided into key sections:

1. Cultural Homogenization
Globalization often leads to cultural homogenization, where local traditions and customs may be overshadowed by dominant global cultures, primarily Western.

This process can result in:

Loss of Indigenous Languages: Many African languages are at risk of extinction as English, French, and other global languages become more prevalent.

Westernization: Adoption of Western lifestyles, fashion, music, and values can overshadow traditional African ways of life.

Erosion of Traditional Practices: Customs, rituals, and traditional knowledge may be neglected or forgotten as modern practices take precedence.

2. Economic Impact
Globalization brings both opportunities and challenges to African economies, influencing cultural practices and social structures:

Market Integration: Increased access to global markets can promote local crafts, arts, and cultural products, providing economic benefits and wider recognition.

Economic Disparities: The influx of multinational corporations can exacerbate economic inequalities, often undermining local industries and traditional economic systems.

Urbanization: Rapid urbanization driven by global economic trends can lead to the depopulation of rural areas, where traditional cultures are often strongest.

3. Technological Influence
The spread of technology is a significant aspect of globalization, impacting African cultures in various ways:

Communication: Enhanced communication through the internet and mobile phones allows for the preservation and dissemination of cultural heritage.

Digital Divide: However, unequal access to technology can deepen existing cultural divides, with urban areas benefiting more than rural regions.

Media Influence: Global media can both promote African cultures to the world and expose local populations to foreign cultures, affecting cultural identities and perceptions.

4. Social and Cultural Exchange
Globalization facilitates increased cultural exchange, which can enrich African cultures:

Cultural Exchange Programs: Interaction with other cultures can lead to a greater appreciation of diversity and the revitalization of cultural practices.

Diaspora Influence: African diasporas play a crucial role in cultural exchange, bringing back knowledge, skills, and cultural elements from abroad.

5. Preservation and Revival of Cultures
While globalization poses threats, it also offers tools and platforms for the preservation and revival of African cultures:

Cultural Tourism: Promotes traditional practices, crafts, and festivals, providing economic incentives for their preservation.

Global Advocacy: International organizations and movements can support the preservation of cultural heritage through funding, advocacy, and collaborative projects.

Education and Awareness: Global platforms can raise awareness about the importance of cultural diversity and heritage, encouraging efforts to preserve and celebrate African cultures.

Conclusion
Globalization's impact on African cultures is multifaceted, encompassing both positive and negative dimensions.
While it poses significant challenges to traditional ways of life, it also offers opportunities for cultural exchange, economic growth, and technological advancement.
Balancing these influences requires conscious efforts to preserve and promote African cultural heritage while embracing beneficial aspects of globalization.

‘ISIS isn’t done with us’: Arrested Tajiks highlight US fears of terror attack on US.........

The recent arrest of eight Tajik nationals believed to have connections to ISIS has heightened concerns among national security officials that a dangerous affiliate of the now-splintered terror group could potentially carry out an attack on US soil, according to multiple US officials who spoke to CNN.

Members of the group initially entered the US at the southern border and requested asylum under US immigration law. It’s unclear whether they entered at the same time and place.

By the time intelligence collected on overseas ISIS targets connected the men to the terror group, they had already been vetted by immigration authorities and allowed into the country, officials said.

Though there is no hard evidence indicating they were sent to the US as part of a terror plot, at least some of the Tajik nationals had expressed extremist rhetoric in their communications, either on social media or in direct private communications that US intelligence was able to monitor, three officials said.

That discovery set off a flurry of emergency investigative efforts by federal agents and analysts across the country, sources said, including physical and electronic surveillance of the men — a counterterrorism operation reminiscent of the years immediately following 9/11, when the FBI investigated numerous homegrown plots.

After a period of surveillance, federal officials in recent days faced a difficult decision: whether to continue surveilling the men in order to determine if they were part of any potential plot or wider terrorist network, or to move in and take them off the street. Rather than risk the worst-case scenario of a potential attack, senior US officials decided to move in and have the men apprehended by ICE agents, one source told CNN.

The men remain in federal custody on immigration charges and will eventually be deported following the counterterror investigation into them.

Tajiks recruited by ISIS
Of particular concern to US officials was that the men hail from Tajikistan, a corner of Central Asia that in recent years has been a source of steady recruitment by ISIS-K, the Afghanistan-based affiliate of the Islamic terrorist group. ISIS-K is led primarily by Tajiks, who have carried out a series of recent attacks in Europe on behalf of the group, including the Crocus Hall attack in Moscow in March that killed more than 100 people.

National security officials fear that at least some of the eight Tajiks were ripe for radicalization by ISIS-K while they were inside the United States, potentially struggling with isolation, financial stress or discrimination — all things that could make a person susceptible to ISIS propaganda glorifying violence.

Senior officials now see a so-called “lone-wolf” attacker who emerges seemingly from nowhere as perhaps the more likely — and potentially equally dangerous — threat, rather than the more traditional coordinated plot carried out by trained operatives.

Compared to terror networks, whose communications can provide possible avenues for surveillance exploitation, lone individuals who do not telegraph their attack plans to anyone present an additionally difficult challenge for security officials.

“We can’t assume it’s not all of the above,” said one senior US official. “We’re too early to know everything we want to know about the depth and texture of the links that might be there” between these eight people and ISIS.

The episode comes as senior intelligence officials have been publicly warning that global conditions have put the risk of a terror attack on US soil at its highest level in recent memory — at the same time that many national security officials also acknowledge that American drawdowns in Afghanistan and elsewhere in the Middle East have reduced intelligence-gathering on traditional terrorism threats.

“It’s no secret that since our drawdowns in various places around the world, we collect less intelligence. This was always a tradeoff we knew we were making,” the senior US official said.

Former acting CIA Director Michael Morell this week co-wrote a widely circulated piece in Foreign Affairs warning that terrorism warning lights are “blinking red,” echoing a recent warning by FBI Director Christopher Wray, who said he sees “blinking lights everywhere I turn.”

“The combination of stated intentions of terrorist groups, growing capabilities they have demonstrated in recent successful and failed attacks around the world, and the fact that several serious plots in the United States have been foiled, point us to an uncomfortable but unavoidable conclusion,” the Foreign Affairs piece read. “Put simply, the United States faces a serious threat of a terrorist attack in the months ahead.”

Gaps in intelligence collection
Intelligence officials are keenly aware of gaps in intelligence collection in Afghanistan, where ISIS-K is primarily based. While officials believe that ISIS-K mainly tries to radicalize and inspire attackers rather than train and field operatives, the group’s rise to prominence is a relatively new phenomenon. That means that there is much that US counterterrorism analysts don’t know about its strategy, recruitment efforts and operational tactics.

US officials and analysts who closely track Islamist terror groups do know that ISIS-K has dramatically ramped up its online propaganda machine. Rather than training and deploying fighters — as al Qaeda did in the 9/11 attacks, for example — ISIS-K has instead focused on radicalizing vulnerable populations. Tajikistan, for example, is one of the poorest countries in the world and its population faces extreme religious repression, both factors that terrorism experts say can make a population vulnerable to radicalization.

Colin Clarke, a researcher who specializes in terrorism, said the group is creating “charismatic propaganda” to reach “out to diasporas that are already in place in Europe, in North America and in the region in Central Asia, and attempting to inspire people to conduct attacks.”

“It seems like it’s just a matter of time before they’re able to pull something off successfully,” Clarke said.

Concerns about the border
The arrests also puts a spotlight on vulnerabilities at the US southern border, an issue Republicans have amplified in the midst of a presidential election year.

“We are literally living on borrowed time,” Republican Oklahoma Sen. James Lankford said from the Senate floor on Wednesday during a speech about the threat of terrorists entering the US through the southern border.

A June 7 report released by the DHS inspector general found that asylum seekers were not always screened in a timely fashion and that border agents could not access all the federal data they needed to vet noncitizens seeking admission into the US.

The US is “at risk of admitting dangerous persons into the country or enabling asylum seekers who may pose significant threats to public safety and national security to continue to reside in the United States,” the report said.

US officials have been paying particular attention to immigrants from Central Asian countries including Tajikistan since last summer, when a group Uzbek nationals who had crossed the southern border were later found to have been assisted in traveling to the United States by a facilitator who had ties to ISIS.

The episode sparked a scramble across the US government to locate and investigate those people.

Two US officials also said that it spurred national security officials to ensure that immigration and intelligence authorities were appropriately monitoring anyone traveling from Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.

“I think what [the incident with the Uzbek nationals] did last summer was suggest central Asians are potentially a population of concern, given what we know about the global ISIS network right now,” the senior US official said.

In 2023, CBP reported 169 encounters with individuals identified as “potential matches” with names on the terrorism watch list.

But that’s not necessarily a reliable gauge of the number of actual terrorists who may be trying to enter the United States, US officials argue. When a name pings on a terror watch list, it could mean any number of things: a person could have a very loose, attenuated connection to a known terrorist. Or they could belong to a legacy terror group — like the FARC — that isn’t known for conducting attacks on US soil. Or they could simply have a similar name as a person of legitimate concern.

That’s what happened with the Jordanian national who was arrested at the gates of the US Marines base at Quantico earlier this year, two US officials said. Although his name returned a hit against one of the watch lists, it turned out to be a “bad match,” according to the senior US official.

The blending of criminality and terrorism in poor countries — like Tajikistan — can also prove incredibly difficult for law enforcement officials to unravel. A person may have regular contact with a family member who has done some paid work for ISIS, for example, without themselves sharing any sympathy for the group.

But, Clarke said, the risk is there: “Crushing poverty [and] an extremely religious population that’s suppressed by its leaders — it’s almost a perfect formula for exporting jihadists.”

Said one law enforcement source: “It’s become cliché, but remains absolutely true: We may be done with ISIS, but ISIS isn’t done with us.”

With her dirty mindset about Oaris and Olympics hosting shows her mindset. Her country America with millions of homeless and drug addicts on streets mostly within California where she comes from.

“Don’t come. Cancel everything.”

The video, which was uploaded in November, now has more than 700,000 views.

The creator, Miranda Starcevic, is a 31-year-old French American who lives in Paris. She usually records herself speaking French, but thought a message about the Olympics would reach more people if it were in English.

And Starcevic wanted her viewers to know that from her perspective, of French citizens who “are kind of middle class,” as she put it: “Nobody wants the Olympic Games. It’s just a hot mess.”

As a visual-first international platform with many young users, TikTok is full of Olympics content. But in addition to the feel-good windows into athletes’ lives and promotional videos from organizers and sponsors, there are also unfiltered clips from residents of Paris warning potential visitors that the city may not deliver its best during the Games.

A 24-year-old Parisian student whose display name is Leo Nora has posted several short clips about the Paris Games, stating they will be “dangerous” and “hell on Earth.”

In one of her videos, she says into the camera, “If you are planning on coming to Paris for the Olympic Games, why? Do not come. Do not come!” The clip has been viewed more than a million times.

“I’ve lived in Paris my whole life,” Leo Nora said in an interview. “I’ve been to really big events in Paris. What prompted me to talk about it is I know how it can go right — and how it can go wrong.”

She and Starcevic had similar reasons for encouraging people to avoid the Games. Both said they were unhappy that the city asked students to give up their student housing so the accommodations could be used for workers during the Games. And both expressed frustration and fears around transportation.

Fares to ride on the Paris Metro will be almost doubling during the Games — a bit of Olympic surge pricing that has already caused much grumbling.

Organizers and government officials are concerned about strikes by transportation workers during the Games, as well as more serious issues like terrorism. Some creators have posted about Paris’ pervasive tourist scams, pickpockets and recent hotel price hikes. People on TikTok also warned that there could be severe overcrowding on trains.

“It’s not rare to have people fainting” in the Metro, Leo Nora said. When someone faints, “the line stops, which causes delays,” she said.

Tessa Bicard, an executive at a cosmetics company whose TikTok handle is Madame Tartempion, posted a video titled “The Olympics are going to be a nightmare for Paris.” It has drawn more than 750,000 views and hundreds of comments.

Bicard, who is originally from Northern California and has lived in Paris for over 12 years, said in an interview that she was actually a big fan of the Olympics.

“I have watched them every year since I was a kid,” she said. “I really like the swimming — and women’s gymnastics, of course.” But, she said, “This is the least excited I’ve ever been about the Olympics.”

Mainly, she said, that is because she doesn’t have tickets. “They are too expensive or impossible to get,” she said. She also stressed that all the different construction projects for the Games have already made daily life difficult. The expected influx of millions of Olympic visitors, she fears, will just make things worse. “My bus route has been complete chaos.”

As an American living in Paris, Bicard said that she often used her TikTok account to answer questions about the city, in addition to fun tips like “how to spot an American in Paris.”

Americans ask: “Where’s the best place to say? What’s the best neighborhood? Do you have a favorite restaurant? All that kind of stuff,” she said. She replies to as many people as she can. “There’s a certain aspect of ‘I feel like I can trust you because you speak with an American accent,’” she said.

When it comes to the Games, Bicard’s view is a bit softer than that of more vocal Olympic naysayers like Leo Nora and Starcevic.

“If you’re going to be here for the Olympics, hopefully this is not your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit Paris,” she said, adding that she expects it to be logistically challenging. “I think it’s going to be really tricky and not at all pleasant to try to do some of those ‘Paris’ things,” she said.

And like Starcevic and Leo Nora — and most Paris residents — Bicard said she was expecting the Metro to be “a total mess” when the Games start. Already, she said, there are posters and billboards around the city, encouraging residents to anticipate the Games. Many see it as “coded language” hinting at what many people are already thinking: “Leave the city if you can — or if you can afford it.”

Leo Nora, who usually posts about feminist and racial issues on TikTok, does not plan to be in Paris during the Games; her boyfriend lives outside the city, and she’ll stay with him. “I get anxious in crowds,” she said. “I don’t want to be the person who faints and ruins it for everyone.”

Starcevic, who owns a sustainable online fashion brand, booked tickets months ago to spend a few days with a friend in Biarritz and a few days in the south of France, in order to be out of the city during the Games. “I’m lucky enough to be able to go,” she said, “But most people don’t have my privilege.”

Bicard, though, says she will stay. She plans to bike or walk to work instead of taking the Metro. And she’s expecting one of two things to happen, she said. “Either it’s going to be an absolute chaotic mess,” she said, or surprisingly calm.

Either way, she shrugged: “Paris is my home. I love it.” And she raises not one eyebrow at the ire that other people in the city seem to have.

“I’m married to a Parisian,” she said, “so I can also say, with a relative amount of authority, that Parisians are not always the easiest people to deal with.”

Israel is determined to defend their rights and whatever the fashion theme protesters of western Europe and American wayward people think.

How Israel's daring hostage rescue mission unfolded: 'A surgical operation'
New details about Israel’s bold rescue of four hostages are coming to light with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) describing the daytime operation as a "high-risk, complex mission" that was "surgical" in its precision.

The mission was planned for weeks using "precise intelligence" and took place at around 11 a.m. local time in the heart of Nuseirat in central Gaza, according to Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari of the IDF.

Officers of the National Police special anti-terror unit of Yamam along with Shin Bet agents simultaneously raided two Hamas buildings to pluck the three male hostages and one female hostage to safety. The soldiers had been undergoing intense training for weeks in preparation for the rescue mission, Hagari said.
Noa Argamani, 26, was rescued at one site, while Almog Meir Jan, 22, Shlomi Ziv, 41, and Andrey Kozlov, 27, were taken from the second location. Argamani has been one of the most widely recognized hostages since video of her abduction was among the first to surface. She can be seen in the video between two men on a motorcycle with one arm outstretched and the other held down as she screams "Don’t kill me!"

Dramatic aerial footage from this morning's rescue shows Meir Jan, Kozlov and Ziv running with Israeli forces to a waiting helicopter before the chopper takes off to bring them to safety.

During the operation, Chief Inspector Arnon Zmora, 36, an officer in the special anti-terror unit of Yamam, was critically injured and later died from his injuries. He leaves behind a wife and two children.

Under 100 Palestinians were killed in the raid, Hagari said.

Hagari said Hamas has been holding hostages inside civilian buildings, and Israeli intelligence was able to pinpoint two of these buildings in Nuseirat where families were staying with armed guards inside.

The buildings were about 650 feet apart, and Israeli forces decided to move on both buildings at the same time because they feared Hamas might kill hostages in one of the buildings if they saw the other coming under attack.

"This is a huge risk because they might have thought that we were preparing for another raid," Hagari said. "You have to understand that they're moving the hostages from flat to flat."

Hagari said the decision to carry out the mission during the day was also to bring about an element of surprise because Hamas would not have been expecting it.

"In the daytime, you take more risks to make sure the surprise element is kept, and we understood that inside the flats it would give us leverage," Hagari said. "We surprised them completely, but it was still hard," he said.

The command to go was given at 11 a.m. and, 25 minutes later, the raid started, he said.

Israeli forces exchanged gunfire with the guards in the building with the three male hostages. In the crossfire, Zmora was injured and then later died at a hospital, Hagari said.

"He is a warrior that gave his life for bringing home four hostages alive," Hagari said of Zmora.

As soldiers left the building, they were also met with gunfire and RPG fire, leading to their vehicle being stuck. Other forces came to their rescue and helped them flee.

The hostages were then taken to two helicopters with the second of those helicopters taking the three hostages and Zmora.
Hagari said the command room where the mission was being directed was tense while it took "hundreds of warriors" in the surrounding area to carry out the operation.

"This is a surgical operation, like a brain operation; it has to be so accurate. Imagine that on a civilian street with a lot of people around with trucks and cars," Hagari said.

Hagari said under 100 Palestinian casualties were reported, and he wasn’t sure how many of them were terrorists.
"But they were using the civilians to embed them with the hostages. They were using the civilians to fire on the Israeli forces when they went out. And from the operation at this level, so many fires was a lot of force. We needed to fire from the air and from the street," Hagari said.

"And some of the casualties were terrorists in the [prepared] targets that we had, and the Air Force conducted the fire during the operation."

To prepare for the mission, Hagari said Israeli forces had built models of the buildings to practice the raid and gathered intelligence in "multiple ways" to ensure the operation would be successful.

"We have tried in the past, but in the end did not execute because we understood we didn't have the right conditions, the right leverage," Hagari said.

"In the past, we conducted in-field operations more than three or four times. Forces from special units were waiting to raid an apartment, but we did not execute that because we understood that we didn't have this leverage. This type of operation has a lot of details, like in a puzzle.
"We need to make sure — and we never have all the links — that we have enough links to ensure that."

Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant described the mission as one of the "most heroic and extraordinary operations" he had witnessed over the course of his 47 years serving in Israel’s defense establishment.

"Our troops showed so much courage operating under heavy fire in the most complex [urban environment in Gaza]," Gallant said.

"I do not remember having completed operations of this kind at this intensity and with this level of cooperation and success."

Sponsored Hamas fashion protesters.....
Challenge to all protesting against ongoing war between Israel and Hamas is ...1. Why did you protest about the killing of 1,200 people just enjoying with music that started this war. 2. Are you people blind and deaf? Almost 50,000 to 70,000 has been killed by Egyptian and Turkey sponsored Arab militia in Sudan and South-Sudan. Millions made homeless and even chased to different countries. In Congo another genocide is taking place sponsored by China, Europe and American big corporation. Are you fashion protesters blind and deaf? All over West Africa like Nigeria, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger same Arab militia sponsored by Egypt and Turkey killing Christians in thousands every week. Ask yourself why most Arab/middleeastern wealthy countries are quiet and can't allow any protest in their country supporting Hamas..... Are you blind and deaf?

The West is about to make a major error in its economic war against Putin
There are few monikers more irritating than that of the “Global South” – the fashionable term for countries making up the developing and low income world. Nations of such disparate and often conflicting geopolitical and economic interest cannot be so easily pigeon-holed. Western powers are scrambling for a legitimate use of seized Russian assets. Yet there is one thing...

DEPRESSION-
If Life Gives You Lemons, Go Throw a Strike or a Spare.
Personal Perspective: There's a way back into the game when you're down.

KEY POINTS-
Bad news cannot only knock you down; it can steal joy from your life.
Sometimes, it's hard to figure out what to do next.
There are many ways to recapture some control in your life, including bowling.

I recently had the joy knocked out of me over a medical issue that was going to put an added layer of caution into my life. I’m not a big fan of cautious living, but sometimes caution is warranted.

The need for caution has to do with living with a single kidney for over 20 years and the remaining one being a bit compromised. In the past, I have had to seriously give up some activities I love, like riding a bike, cross-country skiing, and ice skating, along with a few things I had hoped to do someday, like learning to ride a paddleboard and playing soccer and baseball with my grandchildren.

In short, I had to come to grips with giving up any activity where I might fall or bruise my back.

In reviewing all the past do-nots in my life, my urologist threw in the final clinker: getting jostled in a crowd. His list also included going to shopping malls, riding in crowded subway cars, buses, and elevators, and attending big outdoor events like concerts.

That no-getting-jostled-in-a-crowd took the last wisp of joy remaining in my lungs. Although never a lover of crowds, I have been known to join in on a good, old-fashioned protest march when the need arise—so many things to protest these days, so little time—which is also now absolutely out of the question.

When I was firmly told by my doctor to be even more vigilant than I have been in the past in order to protect my remaining kidney from bruises and bumps, I was overwhelmed by both the new changes and the potential consequences of not making them.

As my urologist put it: “If you bruise or damage your remaining kidney, you could lose it.”

When the Sadness Overwhelms You, Go Bowling
Fortunately, my doctor hadn’t mentioned bowling.

Not that I am what you might call a bowler. I am someone who has bowled from time to time and thought it an okay thing to do at a birthday party.

The day after this rather sobering medical appointment, I was still having trouble finding my good humor. In fact, I was feeling a bit fragile and broken. That’s when my husband suggested we go bowling.

Ten pins 60 feet away. A rather heavy ball. Funny shoes. No one standing behind me who might bump or hit my fragile kidney. Why not?

Everyone throws a gutter ball on occasion, even the best of bowlers. (At least, that’s what I told myself.) If you knock them all down with the first ball in a frame, you get to credit yourself in that frame with the next two balls you bowl: a kind of bonus to a lucky throw that lets you ride your momentary wave of success. If you get a spare, knocking them all down in two balls, which I think is harder than getting that strike thing, you get to add in the next ball you bowl as a bonus to that frame’s score.

But the real bonus in the game is the sense that it’s just you against the things standing in your way. There’s also that satisfying sound of the crack and scatter of the pins when your thrown ball knocks them down.

That heavy ball, those pins standing there taunting you to knock them down, is a control thing: I figured that out. But it’s a game that lets you keep trying, frame after frame, to get it right. There are no three-strikes-and-you're-out rule. No penalty or enforced sitting on the sidelines for the occasional gutterball, cuss word, bad form, or victory dance. If it's your turn, you get to play: no penalty, no judgment.

There’s a great scene in an episode of Suits where Alex takes his socially and physically awkward colleague, Louis Litt, bowling. Faye has just ousted Litt as managing partner of his beloved law firm, and he is demoralized. Alex watches Louis throw a couple of gutterballs and tries to coach him on the finer points of the game. Each suggestion brings on another gutterball until Louis says something about being made fun of as a child and once being filled with rage.

Alex suggests that Louis lean into that long-ago rage and imagine that those ten pins at the end of the alley are really Faye laughing at him.

The next ball Louis throws is a strike, then another and another until he finishes in a balletic victory dance with a perfect score: a 300. That’s not something I’m aiming for. It’s not that it’s beyond my reach, but that it doesn’t matter.

What matters is what Alex said to Louis when he bowled that 300: “After all that has happened to us, we’re still standing.”

I will be fine. Thanks for asking.

I’m still standing.

PERSUASION-
Five Winning Plays to Say It With Style.
Hook people with diction, sensations, sound, repetition, and analogy.

KEY POINTS-
To succeed with style, choose words with rich connotations and specifics evoking palpable sensations.
Follow up by building repeating patterns into your writing, delivering one-two punches of sound and syntax.
Craft analogies with metaphor and simile that come across as heartfelt features, not flimsy frills.

How often do you think, “I wish I could write or speak with style?” Who doesn’t want to come across as cool? Who doesn’t want to play their hand with flair?

But when you make your play, what amplifies your impact as a stylist is not appearing fashionable—it is stimulating in people a more intense neural engagement. That’s how you persuade people, get them to think outside their boxes, get them to act.

When you choose to play your style cards, you have dozens of tricks to choose from—tone, imagery, figures of speech, and more. Which ones rank on the shortlist for a surefire payoff?

There’s no scientific answer. But research shows that five basic elements prove their worth as measured by brain activity. All of them are easy to practice and amplify activity not only in the brain’s sensory, motor, and other circuits. They also fuel the brain’s reward circuit.

A caution: Before you try to score style points, work your message into fit form, trim and taut. After you’ve conditioned your body logic, you can build on it to intensify your lines of reasoning. If you drape style elements onto flabby logic, you’re likely to highlight your message’s ungainliness.

So, per my last post, beware of ornamenting your message with mere bling, which risks adding sparkle without substance. Craft instead those elements that prove their worth, as demonstrated by how they capture attention, pique emotions, and elicit insights.

1. Play With Words
The first winning style play is to replace plain words with vivid ones. If you’re like me, you’re almost always going to start by choosing the first clear word that comes to mind. That’s normal. But then ask yourself: Can I find a more exacting and unexpected word—or a mix of words—that expresses more pointedly what I want to say?

Selecting the right words has always been elemental to the masters of style. Here’s Charles Dickens as he describes a man on the street: “His neckerchief [was] like an eel, his complexion like dirty dough, his mangy fur cap pulled low upon his beetle brows…..” [i]

Less-than-common word combinations—neckerchief and eel, dirty and dough, beetle and brows—they form novel images, vivid, and exacting. They impart genuine style.

And why does that engage? Because readers and listeners continuously predict your next word and phrase.[ii] When you surprise them—with words or anything else—their brains pay extra attention, which can initiate the release of dopamine and natural opioids in the reward circuit.[iii]

The lesson: Once you know what you want to say, find more stylish words to improve how you want to say it.

2. Play With Sensations
Like Dickens, you can also reap the benefits of style by playing with sensations. Just now, you probably experienced some unique ones: the feel of eely slipperiness, the smell of doughy skin, and the sight of bristling beetles.

Which points to the second winning play: Choose words and phrases to activate sensory, motor, and visual neurons. The goal is to have what you say mentally processed in the same neural circuits as sensations in real life.

Here’s Rudyard Kipling: “…and the last puff of the day-wind brought from the unseen villages the scent of damp wood-smoke, hot cakes, dripping undergrowth, and rotting pine-cones. That is the true smell of the Himalayas….” [iv]

And here’s Western writer Zane Grey: “I observed then that the lizard had his jewel eyes upon the bee; he slipped to the edge of the stone, flicked out a long, red tongue, and tore the insect from its honeyed perch.” [v]

When you read Kipling and Grey, you reenact the actual sensory experiences—albeit subtly. This is a reminder when you’re composing to play to all five senses, not just the “picture” people have in their heads.

3. Play With Sound
A third winning style play is to convey meaning through sound. Some words convey meaning via onomatopoeia (click, bang, splash, boom).[vi] You use them all the time to just that effect. But many others convey meaning via sound in ways researchers don’t completely understand.

Ever notice how verbs and nouns for shiny things often begin with “gl”? Glisten, gleam, glint, glare, glimmer, glass, glitz, gloss, glitter. Somehow, the gl and other sounds you might once have called meaningless—l and r are other examples—have specific connotations.[vii]

In 2023, Bodo Winter at the University of Birmingham led a team that cataloged over 14,000 words whose sounds evoke meaning.[viii] Some may convey that meaning by eliciting emotion. For example, research shows people associate r with harsher emotions.[ix]

Here’s novelist Zora Neale Hurston at a cabaret: “This orchestra grows rambunctious, rears on its hind legs and attacks the tonal veil with primitive fury, rending it, clawing it until it breaks….” [x]

You, like Hurston, can take advantage of sound when you use your “ear” to write since you’ve learned the magic of sound since you were a kid.

Playing with recurring sounds is another way to add style—recurring consonants, syllables, and word endings. The ensuing drumbeat—in phrases, sentences, or within paragraphs—establishes a pleasing rhythm and makes the sentence easier to read. See my post on alliteration.

You don’t need the skills of a poet to take advantage of this. Here’s dermatologist Marty Lyman writing about skin: “The sun harms, but it also heals.” And: “We can feel defined and confined by our own skin…” [xi] The first sentence uses alliteration, the second, assonance.

Literary masters use alliteration all the time. Here’s F. Scott Fitzgerald as he ends The Great Gatsby: “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” [xii]

4. Play With Repetition
People also like recurrence when it comes to the repetition of words and syntax. Research shows that one sentence primes people to more quickly grasp a succeeding one with the same structure. The repetition allows people to read faster and with more pleasure.

Here’s writer Anne Lamott: “Seventh and eighth grade is about waiting to get picked for teams, waiting to get asked to dance, waiting to grow taller, waiting to grow breasts… More than anything else, they were about hurt and aloneness.” [xiii]

You probably found the recurrence of “waiting” pleasing. Notice how it also hints at Lamott’s meaning—the feeling of being repeatedly delayed.

And here’s Frederick Douglass in 1852: “For it is not light that is needed, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder… The feeling of the nation must be quickened; the conscience of the nation must be roused; the propriety of the nation must be startled; the hypocrisy of the nation must be exposed….” [xiv]

That syntactic repetition—prime and repeat—can have the power of a one-two punch. Abolitionist Douglass no doubt knew what he was doing.

5. Play With Analogy
The fifth winning style play is the use of analogy. Few style elements deepen meaning more. The most profound insights often come when someone compares a thought or thing we can’t quite grasp to another one that we do.

Metaphor gets the most credit for its analogy power. Here’s Virginia Woolf as she walks along a river: “On the further bank the willows wept in perpetual lamentation, their hair about their shoulders.” [xv]

Simile often works just as well. Here’s D.H. Lawrence: “Lemon trees, like Italians, seem to be happiest when they are touching one another all round.” [xvi]

And here’s the classic primer on negotiation, Getting to Yes: “Like two shipwrecked sailors in a lifeboat at sea quarreling over limited rations and supplies, negotiators may begin by seeing each other as adversaries.” [xvii]

Five basic elements of style. Five elements worth practicing to have more impact as a communicator. Just remember to craft them not just as fashion frills. Craft them to highlight the well-sculpted body of your meaning. Use your flair with words to showcase the fitness of your message, not to reveal your fixation on cool.

Can Video Games Improve Processing Speed in Children?
How to help kids with ADHD and slow processing speed.

KEY POINTS-
Slow processing speed impacts children at school, socially, and in problem-solving.
Emerging neurotechnologies also have the potential to improve slow processing speed.
Improving executive functioning skills can impact processing speed in children.

Slow processing speed impacts children in a variety of ways. Slow processing speed often has a dramatic impact on school performance and the capacity to keep up with peers. It can negatively impact self-esteem. Because it is so frequently misidentified, it can also cause children to develop oppositional tendencies with parents and teachers. Slow processing speed frequently presents itself as children’s difficulty completing schoolwork in a timely fashion, slow-moving behavior, or, conversely, haphazardly rushing through tasks. Longer homework assignments, particularly those that involve writing, are the genesis of frustration and oppositionalism.

The impact of slow processing speed on children has often been underestimated. Slow processing speed is poorly understood or misidentified by parents, educators, and, perhaps most importantly, children. Its impact on academic and social-emotional functioning needs to be better recognized. For example, many family conflicts around activities, such as homework completion or getting ready for school in the morning, are due to unrecognized slow processing speed. Children’s frustration and lack of awareness of their slow processing speed can impact motivation, self-esteem, sustained effort, and school performance. Resignation about keeping up with homework assignments and the demands for taking notes or finishing tests on time is common. Long-term effects of slow processing speed issues in childhood have been linked to depression and psychological distress in adulthood.

Other issues may exacerbate the struggles of children with slow processing speed, including anxiety about their performance, a sense of isolation from others, and trouble keeping up with the pace of peer interactions. Children with slow processing speed also tend to have difficulty with a variety of executive functioning skills, including problems with task initiation, planning, task persistence, and time management.

In a world where speed and efficiency are so highly valued, using video games and other emerging technologies as a tool to help children with slow processing speed is valuable. Studies of neuroplasticity suggest that modest improvements in processing speed are possible. Some of the more promising interventions to improve processing speed in children involve video games and other screen-based technologies. Thus far, the most compelling research has focused on older adults. In a series of studies conducted across six major universities, Posit Science reports that its brain training program, BrainHQ, increased the speed of verbal and visual processing in older adults. The organization reports that the results generalized beyond tasks measured in the study and that improvement continued to be observed in five- and ten-year follow-ups. Other research indicates how action video games can improve processing speed. One recent study suggested that video games that target visual perception functions associated with visual-motor integration can enhance the speed of processing.

However, a prescription of endless video game play to improve slow processing speed is not recommended. The available data suggests that modest improvements in slow processing speed can be achieved through targeted video gameplay. The application of other cognitive training techniques, along with appropriate accommodations, is a far better course of action.

Processing speed is a cognitive process where technology combined with targeted training would seem to make an ideal pair. If we were to look at a physical comparison to processing speed, we might look no further than a running track, where advances in technology, training, equipment, and assessment have all contributed to faster times across many events. These technologies have resulted in world records, but more importantly, they have also made track athletes of all skill levels faster. Similarly to the track, there are limits as to how much improvement in processing speed any person can make as a result of their use of training and technology.

Traditional interventions for children with slow processing speed and ADHD involve the use of accommodations and alternative teaching strategies. For the most part, educators do not make any effort to improve the speed of processing. Instead, these children frequently have 504 plans developed that include additional time to complete tasks, reduction in the amount of expected work, receiving instruction in smaller chunks, scribing or note-taking, and a focus on quality rather than quantity of work.

Until recently, these were the primary interventions to help children with slow processing speed. This approach was based on the aforementioned assumption that processing-speed capacities were fixed, rather than malleable. The science of neuroplasticity, along with the availability of neurotechnologies and productivity tools, has altered this perspective. Psychologists have also begun to examine how other types of interventions and techniques can improve slow processing speed in children with ADHD, including exercise, direct teaching of executive-functioning skills, and complementary skill development.

It’s time to get moving faster on developing new interventions for kids with slow processing speed. While using video games might be the preferred intervention for many kids, the application of common technologies, such as audiobooks for slow readers, dictation apps for slow writers, and apps for time management, can also improve slow processing speed. There is no reason that we should not use both appropriate accommodations and available technologies to support these kids.
