Are we importing goods—or exporting our future potential and human capital?
We are effectively exporting our future potential and human capital by heavily relying on imports.
While we get affordable goods in the short term, the long-term consequences of a shrinking industrial base and limited opportunities for our youth are a significant and often overlooked cost.

Exporting Future Potential-
Importing goods on a massive scale directly undermines a nation's ability to develop its own industrial capacity.
When local manufacturers cannot compete with cheap foreign products, factories close, and the chance to build a diversified, self-sufficient economy is lost.
This isn't just about selling a product; it's about the entire ecosystem of innovation and development that disappears with it. The nation's potential to become a creator and a producer is sacrificed for the immediate benefit of low consumer prices.

Exporting Human Capital-
A lack of local industries means there are fewer opportunities for young people to acquire valuable skills and build careers in manufacturing, engineering, and technology.
Instead of becoming engineers and entrepreneurs, a significant portion of the youth may be limited to jobs in retail, sales, or the informal sector, which offer less potential for career growth and wealth creation.
The result is a brain drain, where talented individuals may leave the country in search of better opportunities. By failing to create a robust local economy, we are essentially forcing our most talented and ambitious citizens to build the economies of other nations.

Focus Africa-
How does reliance on imports limit opportunities for youth entrepreneurship, innovation, and skills development?
Reliance on imports significantly limits opportunities for youth entrepreneurship, innovation, and skills development by eliminating the very sectors where these opportunities would naturally arise.
Instead of being creators and producers, young people are relegated to roles in retail and distribution, with far less potential for growth and advancement.

Impact on Entrepreneurship
A flood of cheap imports makes it incredibly difficult for young entrepreneurs to start businesses in manufacturing and production. The capital required to set up a factory or workshop can't compete with the massive economies of scale enjoyed by foreign producers. This discourages young people from even attempting to enter these sectors, as the risk of failure is too high. Instead, they are pushed into less productive sectors, like becoming distributors or retailers for the very goods that are undercutting local production.

Hindrance to Innovation
Innovation often stems from the practical challenges and opportunities within a production process. When there's no local manufacturing base, there are fewer problems to solve and fewer products to improve. This creates a knowledge gap, as young people don't get the hands-on experience of designing, building, and refining goods. The entire ecosystem for innovation—from product development to marketing—is outsourced, leaving little room for local creativity or technological advancement.

Stifled Skills Development
A strong industrial sector is a key driver of skills development. It provides opportunities for apprenticeships, on-the-job training, and the acquisition of technical skills like engineering, welding, and electronics repair. When these industries disappear due to import competition, so do the opportunities for young people to acquire these valuable skills. This creates a vicious cycle where a lack of skilled labor makes local production even less competitive, further reinforcing the reliance on imports.

How can Nigeria bridge the gap between education and employable skills?
Bridging the gap between education and employable skills in Nigeria is a critical challenge that requires a holistic and multi-pronged approach involving government, educational institutions, the private sector, and civil society.
The current system often produces graduates ill-equipped for the demands of the modern job market, leading to high youth unemployment.

Here's how Nigeria can effectively bridge this gap:

I. Curriculum Reform & Relevance:

Industry-Driven Curriculum Development:

Regular Review & Updates: Curricula at all levels (primary, secondary, tertiary, and TVET) must be regularly reviewed and updated in close collaboration with industry experts, employers, and professional bodies. This ensures that what is taught aligns directly with the skills demanded by the job market.

Competency-Based Learning: Shift the focus from rote memorization and theoretical knowledge to competency-based education. This means assessing students on their ability to apply knowledge and skills to real-world problems.

Inclusion of 21st-Century Skills: Integrate critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, communication, collaboration, digital literacy, and data analysis across all disciplines. These "soft skills" are highly valued by employers.

Emphasis on STEM and Digital Skills:
Strengthen Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education: Invest heavily in STEM education from an early age, ensuring adequate laboratories, equipment, and qualified teachers.

Digital Literacy: Make digital literacy a foundational skill across all levels of education. Introduce coding, data analytics, cybersecurity, and AI/Machine Learning at appropriate stages. Initiatives like NITDA's 3MTT (Three Million Technical Talent) are good starts but need massive scaling.

Mandatory Entrepreneurship Education:
Integrate practical entrepreneurship education into all tertiary curricula. This should go beyond theoretical concepts to include business plan development, mentorship, access to seed funding (even if small), and incubation support. The goal is to produce job creators, not just job seekers.

II. Strengthen Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET):

Rebranding and Destigmatization:

Launch nationwide campaigns to change the societal perception of TVET. Highlight successful TVET graduates, showcase the lucrative nature of skilled trades (e.g., plumbing, welding, carpentry, ICT repairs), and emphasize their vital role in economic development. Combat the notion that TVET is for "school dropouts."

Increased Investment and Modernization:
Adequately fund TVET institutions with modern tools, equipment, workshops, and technology that reflect current industry standards.

Upgrade and maintain existing polytechnics, technical colleges, and vocational centers.

Industry-Led TVET:
Ensure that TVET programs are directly developed and run in partnership with industries. Companies should be involved in curriculum design, practical training, and certification.

Promote apprenticeships and on-the-job training programs, where students learn practical skills directly in a workplace setting.

III. Enhance Industry-Academia Collaboration:

Structured Partnerships:
MOU and Joint Projects: Facilitate Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) between universities/polytechnics and industries for joint research projects, curriculum development, and student internships.

Research & Development (R&D): Encourage industries to fund university research that addresses their specific needs and challenges, creating a symbiotic relationship.

Advisory Boards: Establish industry advisory boards for academic departments to provide direct input on curriculum, necessary skills, and emerging trends.

Internship and Apprenticeship Programs:
Make internships (Industrial Attachment) mandatory, well-structured, and adequately supervised. Ensure students gain relevant, hands-on experience that aligns with their studies.

Incentivize companies (e.g., through tax breaks) to offer quality internships and apprenticeships.

Guest Lecturers and Adjunct Faculty:
Invite industry professionals to serve as guest lecturers, adjunct faculty, or mentors, bringing real-world experience into the classroom.

IV. Teacher Training and Professional Development:-

Skills-Focused Pedagogy:
Train educators at all levels to adopt practical, problem-solving, and project-based teaching methodologies that foster skill development rather than rote learning.

Equip teachers with the skills to integrate technology effectively into their teaching.

Continuous Professional Development:
Provide ongoing training for teachers and lecturers to keep them updated on industry trends, new technologies, and modern pedagogical approaches.

Encourage lecturers to undertake sabbaticals in relevant industries to gain practical experience.

Industry Experience for Educators:
Implement programs that allow academic staff to spend time in relevant industries, gaining practical experience that they can then bring back to the classroom.

V. Leverage Technology and Digital Learning:

E-Learning Platforms:
Invest in robust e-learning platforms and digital resources to complement traditional classroom learning, making education more accessible and flexible.

Promote blended learning models that combine online and in-person instruction.

Access to ICT Infrastructure:
Address the challenges of internet connectivity and reliable power supply, especially in rural areas, to ensure equitable access to digital learning tools.

Provide affordable digital devices to students and educators.

Virtual Labs and Simulations:
Utilize virtual laboratories and simulation software to provide practical experience where physical equipment is limited or too expensive.

VI. Government Policies & Funding:

Increased and Targeted Funding:
Significantly increase the budget allocation to education, specifically earmarking funds for curriculum reform, TVET modernization, industry collaboration initiatives, and teacher training.

Ensure transparent and accountable use of these funds.

Policy Cohesion:
Develop a coherent national education policy that links educational outcomes directly to labor market needs, with clear implementation strategies and monitoring mechanisms.

Avoid frequent policy changes that disrupt progress.

Incentives for Private Sector Engagement:
Offer tax incentives, grants, or subsidies to private companies that invest in skills development, apprenticeships, or collaborate with educational institutions.

Strengthen Career Guidance & Counseling:
Implement effective career guidance and counseling services in schools and universities to help students make informed choices about their academic and career paths, aligning their interests with market demands.

By addressing these areas comprehensively, Nigeria can transform its educational system into a powerful engine for skill development, producing a workforce that is not only educated but also highly employable and capable of driving economic growth and innovation.

Former White House chief strategist and MAGA stalwart Steve Bannon leaned into his tirade against Elon Musk after the world’s richest person got into a public feud with President Trump, warning the tech billionaire that “we’re going to go to f‑‑‑ing war.”

“The president treated him almost like a son. He invited his family to Christmas dinner. He let him sleep over. He let him walk in and out of meetings,” Bannon, an ardent skeptic of Musk, said in an interview with Politico that was published late Thursday. “The president went to the max informality to welcome this guy.”

“You’re going to tell me we should allow some f‑‑‑ing punk to sit there and say he should be impeached and [VP] JD [Vance] should step in? F‑‑‑ you, dude,” the “War Room” podcast host continued. “We’re going to go to f‑‑‑ing war, and I’m going to rip your f‑‑‑ing face off.”

Hostilities between Musk and Trump were on public display Thursday with the two men trading blows on social media after the Tesla CEO slammed the GOP-backed megabill full of the president’s legislative priorities as an “abomination.”

Trump blasted Musk during Germany Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to the White House for criticizing the “big, beautiful bill” — the massive piece of legislation currently moving through Congress.

Musk fired back at Trump on the social platform X, which he purchased in 2022, backing calls for the president to be impeached and Vice President Vance to take over as his successor. The tech mogul also accused Trump of being named in convicted sex offender and financier Jeffrey Epstein’s files.

Trump threatened to cut off billions of dollars of federal contracts with Musk’s companies, while the entrepreneur wrote that he would decommission SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft.

Bannon told Politico that he hopes White House trade adviser Peter Navarro is “drafting executive orders even as we speak [to] implement the Defense Production Act to seize both SpaceX and Starlink and put them under government management until that time that all investigations into Musk are complete.”

As the bitter implosion was unfolding earlier in the day, Bannon called for Musk’s immigration status to be investigated and for the billionaire, who was born in South Africa, to be deported.

Mission To Mars: Trump-Musk Ugly Spat Could Jeopardize Red Planet Mission, Renowned Mars Expert Says

Robert Zubrin quite literally wrote the book on why humanity should go to Mars — so why has the renowned aerospace engineer soured on Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur leading the charge?

In an interview, the 73-year-old founder of the Mars Society delivered a blistering critique, accusing the world’s richest person of undermining the mission through divisive politics and a bleak vision of the Red Planet as an escape from Earth rather than a journey of hope.

“On one level, he’s absolutely instrumental in opening up this opportunity to get humans to Mars, both through the development of Starship and also the inspiration that has caused,” Zubrin told AFP, referring to Musk’s prototype rocket.

“But for it to succeed, it has to go beyond these — this initiative cannot be seen as a Musk hobbyhorse or a Trump hobbyhorse — it must be seen, at a minimum, as America’s program, or preferably the Free World’s program.”

Zubrin’s 1996 book “The Case for Mars,” since updated numerous times, laid out a practical blueprint for reaching and settling the Red Planet using existing technologies and local resources — with the ultimate goal of transforming the atmosphere for long-term human habitation.

Supporter Turned Critic
The book won praise from Musk himself, who once posed with Zubrin at SpaceX’s Starship facility in Texas and called it “worth reading.”

But today, Zubrin — who co-authored the Mars Direct plan in 1990, has published hundreds of papers, and invented several advanced propulsion concepts — sees troubling signs.

While he described Musk as a “tremendously talented and forceful person,” he said his success has bred “hubris and arrogance,” comparing him to Napoleon as he thumped his fist for emphasis.

He was especially critical of Musk’s endorsement of Donald Trump during the 2024 election and his role as the administration’s cost-slashing chainsaw wielder.

“This combination of Trump and Musk is not going to persist forever,” Zubrin warned, in an interview conducted before the pair’s relationship imploded Thursday in a spectacular public row.

“And if this program is identified as their deal, it will be crushed as soon as opposing forces have sufficient power.”

During their fight on Thursday, Trump called Musk “crazy” and threatened to terminate his government contracts worth billions of dollars.

Zubrin also condemned Trump’s efforts to gut NASA’s space science budget — a move he sees as fundamentally at odds with the exploratory spirit of the Mars endeavor.

The Mars Sample Return mission — aimed at retrieving specimens collected by the Perseverance rover — is among the biggest science projects on the chopping block.

Although the mission, developed in collaboration with the European Space Agency, has suffered delays and budget overruns, Zubrin said that eliminating it entirely rather than reforming it would be a mistake.

“This threatens to brand this program with the mark of Cain of original sin — that this program is born with the blood of the murder of Space Science on it.”

Where Zubrin still sees promise is in Starship — Musk’s massive prototype rocket aimed at making life multiplanetary, though the vessel’s repeated test explosions show there’s a long way to go.

He diverges with Musk over how it should be used. Starship is far too large to serve as a Mars ascent vehicle, Zubrin said.

The Mars expert has proposed a vessel he calls Starboat — a compact lander that could shuttle between planetary surfaces and orbit, using a fraction of the propellant and surface power.

But his sharpest critiques are philosophical.

He rejects Musk’s portrayal of Mars as a refuge from a dying Earth — a vision that echoes the works of science fiction writer Isaac Asimov.

“We’re not going to Mars out of despair,” Zubrin said. “We’re going to Mars out of hope… to establish new branches of human civilization which will add their creative capacity to that of humanity as a whole.”

He sees Mars not as a refuge but as a renewal, where a campaign beginning with robotic missions in the late 2020s and culminating in human landings by 2033 could inspire bipartisan support, showcase American ingenuity, and restore national purpose.

“If we do the kind of program that I advocated… we will once again, as we did in Apollo, astonish the world with what free people can do,” he said. “We’ll make it clear that freedom, not authoritarianism, is the future of the human race.”

Indians, Piyush Goyal is 100% correct.
India's commerce minister said his country's startups needed to emulate China by focusing on high-end tech and not quick grocery deliveries or fancy ice cream - harsh criticism that had entrepreneurs quickly pointing out the government's shortcomings.

Piyush Goyal told a startup event in New Delhi late on Thursday that too many were offering food delivery so that "the rich can get their meals without moving out of their house" and were "turning unemployed youth into cheap labour."

"Are we going to be happy being delivery boys and girls? (Making) fancy ice cream and cookies ... is that the destiny of India?" he said, showing a slide titled "India vs. China. The Startup Reality Check".

"What do the Chinese startups do? Work on developing electric mobility, battery technology ... look at what the other side is doing - robotics, automation, machine learning, preparing themselves for 3D manufacturing," Goyal said.

Mark Cuban Says, If They Replaced Elon Musk With Him, He's Still Try to Make Government Smaller By 'Cutting A Lot Of People'
Billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban says he doesn't need a political title to shake up big systems—and if he were ever asked to replace Elon Musk in running the government, he'd still aim to shrink it dramatically.

Cuban Would Still Shrink Government—Just With a Plan
“Trying to cut the size of government... and cutting a lot of people for better or worse, comes with the territory,” Cuban said on a recent episode of “The Lincoln Project Podcast.” “You can’t make government smaller and not cut hundreds of thousands, if not, you know, some significant number.”
Throughout the interview, Cuban stressed the importance of planning and transparency, and his belief that without a strategy, drastic government cuts result in more harm than good.

“Shock and awe is great, but if there’s no plan behind shock and awe, it’s just shock and awful,” he said.

Donald Trump’s shoot-from-the-lip style kept Americans on the edge of their seats during last year's campaign. But now that he's speaking as a president and not as a candidate, his words are being used against him in court in the blizzard of litigation challenging his agenda.

The spontaneity is complicating his administration's legal positions. Nowhere has this been clearer than in cases involving his adviser Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency, the driving force in his efforts to downsize and overhaul the federal government.

The latest example came earlier this week when U.S. District Judge Theodore Chuang ruled that Musk had likely violated the Constitution by dismantling the United States Agency for International Development.

The lawsuit turned on the question of whether the billionaire entrepreneur had overstepped his authority. Justice Department lawyers and White House officials insist that Musk is merely a presidential adviser, not the actual leader of

Chinese President Xi Jinping plans to chair a symposium to boost private sector sentiment next week that will be attended by the country's business leaders including Alibaba co-founder Jack Ma, three people with knowledge of the meeting said.

Xi rarely chairs symposiums about the private sector and the event underscores the numerous challenges facing China Inc, from escalating tensions with the United States under President Donald Trump to sputtering growth for the domestic economy.

Many of the entrepreneurs will be from the tech sector and Xi is expected to encourage them to expand their businesses domestically and internationally amidst an intensifying Sino-U.S. technology war, two sources said.
The symposium is likely to take place on Monday.

The interim U.S. attorney in Washington warned Monday his office would pursue charges against "anyone who impedes" the work of tech entrepreneur Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency, which President Donald Trump has tasked with dismantling the federal bureaucracy.

Justice Department's message was delivered shortly before the White House confirmed that Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, had been made a "special government employee" amid his efforts to downsize and restructure the federal government.

Ed Martin, who was appointed by Trump last month as U.S. attorney of the District of Columbia, referenced DOGE staff who have been "targeted publicly," Martin said, "Any threats, confrontations, or other actions that in any way impact their work may break numerous laws"

"Let me assure you of this: we will pursue any and all legal action against anyone who impedes on your work or threatens your people," Martin said. "We will protect DOGE and other (federal) workers no matter

President Trump on Sunday slammed the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), arguing it is poorly run after recent news reports that he is considering merging the agency with the State Department.

“It’s been run by a bunch of radical lunatics, and we’re getting them out. USAID, run by radical lunatics, and we’re getting them out, and then we’ll make a decision,” Trump said.
USAID sends aid to communities impacted by conflicts and assists developing countries on many aspects. Democrats have slammed Trump over the reports about USAID joining the State Department, noting that the agency is “by statute, an independent establishment.”
Trump also praised billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk on Sunday night, after reports that two top USAID security officials were put on leave after trying to stop the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which Musk leads, from accessing its systems.

Elon Musk, billionaire entrepreneur and increasingly close ally to President-elect Donald Trump, endorsed Germany's far right political party in a series of recent posts, following a deadly Christmas market attack there Friday evening.
A driver rammed into a crowd Magdeburg, Germany, killing at least five people and leaving more than 200 injured, according to officials.

Musk has become increasingly influential in American politics, seen as having Trump's ear and set to co-lead the newly created Department of Government Efficiency. He is now wading into Germany's election campaign, calling on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to resign and throwing his support behind the populist anti-immigration AfD.

"Scholz should resign immediately," Musk posted on X, adding: "Incompetent fool."
"The traditional political parties in Germany have utterly failed the people," he wrote in another post. "AfD is the only hope for Germany"

A pair of Democratic senators called for a federal investigation into Elon Musk’s involvement in SpaceX’s federal contracts following reports the tech billionaire has been in regular contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In a letter sent Friday, Senate Armed Services Committee Chair Jack Reed (D-R.I.) and Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) said Musk’s reported relations with a U.S. adversary “pose serious questions” about his “reliability as a government contract and a clearance holder.”

Musk’s aerospace company, SpaceX, holds contracts with the Department of Defense and Intelligence Community worth billions of dollars. He is also a “prime contractor” for the Space Force’s National Security Space program and holds a $1.8 billion classified contract with the National Reconnaissance Office, the lawmakers noted.

The tech entrepreneur has reportedly claimed he holds a U.S. security clearance as part of these federal agreements.

Haiti will name entrepreneur and former senate candidate Alix Didier Fils-Aime to replace Prime Minister Garry Conille, who was tapped for the role in May, according to a transitional presidential council draft resolution seen by Reuters.

The shakeup is the latest blow to political stability in the country, which has been wracked with worsening violence. Armed gangs have gained control of most of capital Port-au-Prince and expanded to nearby regions, fueling hunger and forcing hundreds of thousands from their homes.

Didier Fils-Aime is the son of well-known Haitian activist, Alix Fils-Aime, who was jailed under the regime of dictator Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier.

Conille, who also briefly led the country over a decade ago, has been prime minister for about six months. He was appointed to the role in May by Haiti's transition council to return to the role as the Caribbean nation works to restore stability.

How Telegram arrest could unlock Russian front line secrets
Pavel Durov was arrested last month, Russia’s public space erupted in indignation.

Depending on who you asked, France had launched an attack on freedom of speech; a Russophobic harassment of one of the country’s greatest entrepreneurs; or a Nato-led intelligence operation aimed at penetrating the command and control of Russia’s army in Ukraine.

They argued, that Mr Durov was a Kremlin agent; his public persona as an exiled free-speech champion, a cover story; the “secure” messenger he runs, a spy tool.

So what does Mr Durov know? Telegram founder about to hand over the keys to Russia’s war in Ukraine to Nato?

There’s the usual mystery surrounding questions of intelligence and national security; there’s the difficulty of distinguishing genuine concern from paranoia and propaganda; and there is a war on.
“I think the Kremlin is worried that Western intelligence can obtain a lot of insight into Russia’s conduct of t

Bill Gates says the world is facing two options: A ‘major war’ or another pandemic in less than 30 years
There are some questions that keep even billionaire philanthropist and entrepreneur Bill Gates up at night. Will there be another pandemic? Are global tensions going to reach a boiling point, sparking a global war? What would push us to that precipice?

While Gates, a father of three, is determinedly optimistic about the likes of AI and eradicating deadly diseases like polio, he remains concerned about either a widespread war or another pandemic.

He cited "a lot of unrest" in the world at the moment, which could spark "a major war."

But even if that conflict is avoided, "then yes, there will be another pandemic, most likely in the next 25 years,” Gates said.
He was critical of America's response to the crisis, saying: “The country that the world expected to lead and be the model fell short of those expectations.

Mark Cuban Tells Elon Musk 'Delete Your Account' After Tech Billionaire Calls Tucker Carlson's Latest Episode On WW2 And Churchill 'Worth Watching'
Billionaire entrepreneurs Mark Cuban and Elon Musk found themselves at odds over a controversial interview conducted by former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. The interview, which focused on World War II and Winston Churchill, sparked a strong reaction from Cuban after Musk endorsed it as “worth watching.”
The spark of controversy ignited when Musk, the CEO of Tesla Inc. and SpaceX, took to X (formerly Twitter) to endorse an interview featuring Carlson and Darryl Cooper, host of The MartyrMade Podcast.

Musk wrote, “Very interesting. Worth watching,” drawing attention to the interview. Carlson had introduced Cooper as possibly “the best and most honest popular historian in the United States,” noting that Cooper’s latest project delves into what Carlson termed “the most forbidden of all: trying to understand World War Two.”

After years of pressure on Durov, Russia suddenly rallies behind him.
Days after gunmen killed 145 concert-goers at a venue near Moscow in March, as allegations emerged that the assailants had been recruited on Telegram, the Kremlin issued a stern warning to its founder.

"We would expect more attention from Pavel Durov, because this unique and phenomenal resource ... is increasingly becoming a tool in the hands of terrorists," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Five months later, as French prosecutors pursue an investigation into Telegram founder and boss Durov over the use of the messaging app for fraud, drug trafficking, money laundering and other forms of organised crime, Moscow has changed its public stance on the tech entrepreneur.

With some Russians now hailing Durov as a hero of free speech, Peskov said on Thursday that the case against him should "not turn into political persecution".
