Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who country has been fighting off a full-scale Russian invasion for three years, said in his nightly video address: "Today our teams - those of Ukraine and the US - have started to prepare a meeting."
His head of the presidential office, Andriy Yermak, had spoken to US National Security Advisor Michael Waltz on the phone, Zelensky said.
The first results of talks may be available as early as next week, Zelensky announced, but it remained unclear who would take part in a possible meeting.
