President Donald Trump said on Friday he plans to announce reciprocal tariffs on many countries by Monday or Tuesday of next week, a major escalation of his offensive to tear up and reshape global trade relationships in the U.S.' favor.
Trump did not identify which countries would be hit but suggested it would be a broad effort that could also help solve U.S. budget problems.

"I'll be announcing that, next week, reciprocal trade, so that we're treated evenly with other countries," Trump said. "We don't want any more, any less."
The move would fulfill Trump's campaign promise to impose tariffs on American imports equal to rates that trading partners impose on American exports.

Trump made the announcement during a meeting with visiting Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. He said auto tariffs remained on the table amid reports that the White House was weighing potential exemptions.

Democratic state attorneys general continued their legal resistance, filing a new lawsuit accusing Trump and the Treasury Department of violating federal law by granting Elon Musk’s aides access to a sensitive federal payments database.

Coalitions of states have also challenged the president’s orders to end birthright citizenship and freeze federal funding — both now halted by courts.

The newest suit, filed in federal court in Manhattan, argues that granting access to the staffers from Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency puts at risk billions of dollars in grants, health insurance payments and tax refunds that the states or their residents receive each year.

“Musk and DOGE have no authority to access Americans’ private information and some of our country’s most sensitive data,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James, who is leading the complaint. “I am taking action to keep our information secure.”

Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino on Thursday denied the U.S. State Department’s claim that his country had reached a deal allowing U.S. warships to transit the Panama Canal for free.
Mulino said he had told U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth on Wednesday that he could neither set the fees to transit the canal nor exempt anyone from them and that he was surprised by the U.S. State Department’s statement suggesting otherwise late Wednesday.

“I completely reject that statement yesterday,” Mulino said during his weekly press conference, adding that he had asked Panama’s ambassador in Washington to dispute the State Department’s statement. He was scheduled to speak with U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday.

On Wednesday evening, the U.S. State Department said via X that “U.S. government vessels can now transit the Panama Canal without charge fees, saving the U.S. government millions of dollars a year.”

Fico, who survived an assassination attempt in May 2024, has escalated the tension in the country by accusing protest organizers of being in contact with foreigners who organized recent anti-government protests in Georgia and are under control of Ukraine’s authorities who, he said, are working toward engineering a coup in Slovakia.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio weighed in on President Trump’s proposal to take over the Gaza Strip, calling to “Make Gaza Beautiful Again.”
“Gaza MUST BE FREE from Hamas,” Rubio posted to the social platform X. “As POTUS shared today, the United States stands ready to lead and Make Gaza Beautiful Again. Our pursuit is one of lasting peace in the region for all people.”

On Tuesday, Trump met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. During a press conference after the meeting, the president floated the idea that the U.S. would take over the Gaza Strip.
Trump said Palestinians in Gaza could be relocated and settled elsewhere, and that they should not want to return to Gaza.
He said America would be responsible for cleaning up and rebuilding the destroyed region.

“I think you’ll make that into an international, unbelievable place. … I don’t want to be cute, I don’t want to be a wise guy, but the Riviera of the Middle East. … This could be so magnificent,” Trump said.
